Short-handed…?
“Work” is a dirty word anymore and is something to be avoided so we can move on to what we “really” enjoy…never ending relaxation and play. I like my fair share of rest and romping around but I think a constant state of vegetation is not what we were MADE to do…
…I was born with a disfigured right arm that is missing two fingers and most of my forearm. My arm curls in like a crab pincher and I will say it does look goofy…at least that is what every toddler in public has told me. So from the start I was born “short handed” and really expected little of myself.
But growing up in small town in midwestern Montana I learned that its not what you don’t have, its what you have and you are responsible on how you use it. It took many hard years to figure that out…and with that I decided to work harder than anyone with two hands and opportunities just seemed to appear. I received valuable work experience and friendships along the way which has got me here today.
I decided in 2015 that I would start a business in making knives and welding, which was a hobby up till 2023. I was always asked, “why make knives? I mean I get welding but, why knives? Is there a market for that? Is that something worth pursuing? Is it really a helpful service to society?” I’m not sure how to answer, quite frankly. My only response is: why not try to build the best of something I enjoy and want others to enjoy as well? To make something well is an amazing gift and a worthy endeavor. Being “short handed” ,as I say, has really made me appreciate craftsmanship, adversity and the gift that work really is. Making knives and welding is a few of many expressions of saying “no” to self-pity, self-loathing and coasting in life in doing the bare minimum. All of my work, whether knives or welding, is done with the upmost care and diligence and I would hope this inspires anyone to get out there and try…and also buy a knife!
